Here are some of the top communities in the area and what they have to offer.

Windermere

This suburban area has a cool, youthful feel and is home to a number of fabulous communities. Overlooking the North Saskatchewan River valley, Windermere is bounded on the south by the future realignment of Ellerslie Road, on the east by 170 Street SW/Terwillegar Drive, and on the west and northwest by the river valley.

It’s home to the trendy Currents of Windermere Shopping Centre as well as beloved local restaurants including Brown’s Socialhouse, Oliveto Trattoria, and Asian fusion restaurant XIX Nineteen.

If you love communities with charming old English flair, then you will love Langdale. Located in Windermere, Langdale has a quaint urban forest, rustic park benches and old-fashioned lamp posts to give character to the community. It’s located on 170 Street and Ellerslie Road, right next to Anthony Henday Drive. This puts you in close proximity to the west end and south side. It’s just minutes from Currents of Windermere, and has lots of nearby parks and recreation facilities to choose from.

Rutherford

One of the newer communities in southwest Edmonton, Rutherford is ideal for new families, as 85% of the area is made up of single family homes. Its location is between 127 Street and James Mowatt Trail and northbound Ellerslie road, and just north of 30 Avenue to the south. Lush, green spaces characterize the area, as well as a central park, South Edmonton Common, and nearby golf courses.

In Rutherford, you will find two K-9 schools: Johnny Bright School and Monsignor Fee Otterson Elementary/Junior High School. The area has a variety of local amenities, including two grocery stores, multiple banks and several other shops.

Ambleside

This newer southwest Edmonton community is also located in Windermere and began seeing development after 2000. Ambleside is situated south of Anthony Henday Drive. It’s also close to the Currents of Windemere Shopping Centre, with easy access to the airport and Rabbit Hill Snow Resort.

Ambleside is centrally located close to four golf courses, the Terwillegar Community Rec Centre, and a number of parks. You’ll also be close to Safeway, Sobey’s, and South Edmonton Common.

Transportation in Southwest Edmonton

As in all of Alberta’s larger cities, Edmonton has a well-developed transportation system. You can take the ETS to reach your destination, making your commute an easy one. The city also has a Light Rail Transit (LRT) system that connects the south of the city with downtown Edmonton. The ETS also runs a bus system for disabled residents called DATS (Disabled Adult Transit System). Strathcona County Transit and St. Albert Transit provides commuter service to the city suburbs.

Living in southwest Edmonton gives you easy, convenient access in and out of the city to Calgary and Red Deer via the Queen Elizabeth II Highway.
